ABOUT THE CHALLENGE
What is the Challenge?
The Reel Challenge is a learning experience, networking opportunity, film competition, pressure cooker and international adventure wrapped up in one 10-day event.
You start in London at our Launch Workshop. Then you have 9 days to get from London to Budapest 'by any means' (the route is entirely up to you) while making your short film en-route. When you arrive in Budapest, you submit your film and we put on a film festival to showcase all the entries.
This page tells you everything you need to know to get started on your journey: how the event works, what the rules are, what's included in the ticket and what you'll need to cover for yourself.
“It brings you out of your comfort zone and makes you feel like you can take on anything… it’s about your journey and how you handle what the world throws at you…”
“It's been my most enjoyable time as a filmmaker. A properly challenging yet unbelievably rewarding experience... literally could not recommend it more!”
Your main submission will be a short film of any genre, up to five minutes long.
It must relate in some way to our yearly theme (released 10 days before the Launch).
You can sign up for Reel either as an individual or as part of a team. We will ask you when you book your ticket what your plans are.
Note: there is a maximum team size of six filmmakers.
You will provide your own kit.
All films are judged equally, so you don't need an expensive camera.
In fact, one of our 2016 winners shot their film entirely on an iPhone.
What is included?
A full day workshop hosted in central London. You'll work with film professionals to help you prepare your ideas for the Challenge ahead.
3x nights accommodation (London, Budapest)
One night of accommodation in London after the launch, plus two nights in Budapest -one before and one after the film festival.
Reel film festival
A day-long celebration of your films, hosted at one of Budapest's best 'ruin bars'. We'll screen all the films and provide live feedback with our panel of expert judges.
An exciting evening recognising the year's best entries with amazing prizes from our sponsors.
Celebrate in style at one of the city's best venues.
What is not included?
Travel and accommodation
We provide the 'A' and 'B' but getting between them is up to you: in the past, participants have flown, interrailed, driven and even cycled! It's all part of the adventure.
You'll provide your kit for filming and editing. But you don't need to worry about buying expensive gear: we've had participants take part with just their iPhones before. If you want additional recommendations, just contact us.
If you sign up as an individual we can't guarantee to put you in a team (although lots of individuals do end up teaming up beforehand or at our Launch workshop - and we'll help wherever we can)!
